Military field camping is not recreational camping; it is sustained living in austere environments where equipment failure has real consequences. Military camping gear is built to function when civilian recreational gear would fail: in sustained precipitation, at subfreezing temperatures, during rough handling in field movement, and through repeated deployment and recovery cycles. Every item in this collection meets the standard of field use, not the standard of a weekend trip to a developed campsite.

Campsite Equipment Categories

Shelter Systems: Military ponchos, poncho liners, and improvised shelter systems for field operations. A military poncho and Woobie combination provides a functional sleeping system down to approximately 40°F and can be configured as a lean-to shelter for rain protection with two poles and appropriate cordage. Browse rainwear and ponchos.

Fire Starting Equipment: Military-grade fire starting tools for field operations where matches may be wet and commercial lighters may fail. Magnesium fire starters, waterproof matches, and compressed fire-starting tinder for reliable ignition in adverse conditions.

Camp Cookware & Field Rations: Military canteen cups, mess kits, and field cooking equipment compatible with military canteen systems. MREs and field rations for sustained caloric supply in field environments. Browse food and water gear.

Complete your field kit with outdoor survival gear, paracord and utility cord, tactical backpacks, and knives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Match your sleeping bag temperature rating to the lowest expected overnight temperature in your operating environment. Military sleep systems typically include a patrol sleeping bag rated to approximately 30°F and a supplemental bag that extends the system to -10°F or lower when combined. For recreational camping, choose a bag rated 10-15 degrees below your expected lowest overnight temperature to provide a comfort margin.

A military poncho serves multiple campsite functions beyond rain protection. It configures as a lean-to shelter when tied between trees and staked at the front corners. Combined with a poncho liner (Woobie), it creates a sleeping bag system. Laid flat, it serves as a ground cloth under a sleeping bag or as a pack cover during rain. Two ponchos snapped together create a larger shelter footprint for multiple personnel.

Shave magnesium from the block into a small pile using a knife edge. Strike the flint strip on the opposite side of the block with your knife spin. The sparks ignite the magnesium shavings, which burn at an extremely high temperature and ignite the tinder placed around the pile. The magnesium burns briefly and intensely have dry tinder ready before striking, and shield the pile from wind.
