Survival is not about being in the wilderness. It is about being prepared for when the systems you depend on, such as power, communication, supply chains, and emergency services, are unavailable or overwhelmed. Military outdoor survival gear is designed for exactly that scenario, reliable performance in austere conditions without the support structure of modern civilization. Every item in this collection is selected for the same criteria the military uses: does it work when everything else fails, and does it keep working through hard use and rough conditions?

Survival Gear Categories at PX Supply

Knives & Cutting Tools

A fixed-blade or folding tactical knife is the most fundamental survival tool. It is the one piece of equipment that can help you acquire food, build shelter, prepare medical supplies, and defend yourself if necessary. Our knife collection covers military fixed-blade combat knives, folding tactical knives for everyday carry, and multi-tool systems that combine cutting with screwdriving, plier, and wire-cutting capability. Browse knives.

Lighting & Illumination

Tactical flashlights, headlamps, and chemical light sticks for operations in low-light and no-light environments. Military-grade lighting equipment is designed for scenarios where it matters most: power outages, night operations, search and rescue, and emergency signaling. Look for aluminum body construction, multiple brightness modes, and a momentary-on tail switch for tactical use. Browse lighting.

[H3] Water Purification & Hydration

Canteens, water purification tablets, filtration straw systems, and hydration bladders for field operations where potable water is not available. Dehydration degrades physical and cognitive performance within hours and becomes life-threatening within days. Every field kit should include, at a minimum, a 1-quart canteen and purification tablets, the minimum viable water system for short-duration field operations. Browse food and water gear.

Paracord & Rappelling Gear

550 paracord, the military standard utility cord, has more field uses than almost any other single piece of equipment. Shelter construction, equipment lashing, improvised medical tourniquets, boot laces, snares, and clotheslines are a fraction of the applications documented across decades of military field use. Our paracord collection includes bulk spools, bracelet kits, and pre-tied utility lengths in military-standard colors. Browse paracord.

Campsite & Field Equipment

Tents, sleeping systems, fire starting tools, camp cookware, and shelter equipment for extended field operations and outdoor living. Military field camping equipment prioritizes durability and function over weight savings. The civilian ultralight backpacking market makes different trade-offs than military field use. Browse campsite gear.

Tools & Equipment

Entrenching tools, multi-tools, axes, and general field equipment for construction, clearing, and utility work in field environments. A military entrenching tool (E-tool) is one of the most useful pieces of field equipment available. It digs fighting positions, clears debris, serves as a pry bar, and has served military personnel across every conflict of the last century. Browse tools and equipment.

[H2] Building a Field Survival Kit - The Military Framework

Military survival training organizes field preparedness around five priority categories: personal protection from the environment, water, fire, signaling, and food. A basic field survival kit addresses all five. Personal protection includes a shelter system, an emergency blanket, and appropriate clothing for the environment. Water requires a canteen and purification capability. Fire requires at a minimum two ignition sources. Signaling requires a mirror and whistle at a minimum. Food requires a minimum 24-hour caloric supply for short operations.

Build your kit with tactical backpacks to carry it, first aid kits for medical capability, tactical boots for terrain protection, and BDU pants for environmental protection and gear organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Water purification capability and a cutting tool are the two most universally critical pieces of survival equipment. Dehydration from contaminated water kills faster than almost any other threat in survival scenarios. A knife or multi-tool addresses more field needs than any other single item. If you could only carry two items into an uncertain situation, a reliable cutting tool and water purification capability would cover the widest range of survival priorities.

550 paracord refers to parachute cord rated to a minimum breaking strength of 550 pounds. It was originally used as the suspension lines of military parachutes during World War II. After the war, soldiers and outdoorspeople discovered its usefulness as a general utility cord, and it has been a field staple ever since. Type III 550 paracord has seven interior nylon strands that can be separated for finer uses like fishing line, sutures, and snare construction.

Iodine-based water purification tablets typically have a shelf life of 4 years when sealed. Chlorine dioxide tablets, the military's preferred purification method, have a shelf life of approximately 4 years sealed and should be replaced after opening. Check the expiration date on your tablets before including them in any kit and replace them annually as standard practice.

A military entrenching tool (E-tool) is a folding compact shovel used by military personnel for digging fighting positions, field latrines, and general earthwork. The standard military E-tool has a steel blade that locks into straight and angled positions and a folding aluminum handle. Modern versions often include a saw edge on one side for cutting roots and light wood. The E-tool is one of the most useful and underrated pieces of field equipment for outdoor operations.
