Tactical Vest vs Plate Carrier - Understanding the Difference
The most common point of confusion in tactical gear is the difference between a tactical vest and a plate carrier. A tactical vest carries gear, magazines, tools, and medical equipment, but provides zero ballistic protection. A plate carrier is engineered specifically to hold ballistic armor plates and provides genuine ballistic protection as its primary function. For environments with a realistic incoming fire threat, a plate carrier is the correct choice. For environments where gear organization is the primary need and ballistic protection is not required, a tactical vest is lighter, cooler, and more practical. Never substitute a tactical vest for a plate carrier in a high-threat environment.
